1871 GOLGOTHA ENGRAVING - ART REPRODUCTION

1) First generation reproduction of an original engraving, purchased in Europe.

2) Each reproduction includes every mark, stain, and blemish as is on the
original…including a distinguished stamping mark around the border of the art
piece….derived by the steel plate that is pressed onto the natural/handmade
paper on the original engraving.

3) The artwork depicts the dramatic scene at the time of crucifixion
A) The sky has turned dark (Luke 23:44)
B) The sun was obscured/stopped shining (Luke 23:45) and is covered up (right side of painting)
C) The Temple Mount and Jerusalem are in the distance and seemed to be
illuminated from a light source that comes from behind Jesus and the
crosses…also included in the landscape of the painting, is the Kidron Valley
and Mount of Olives
D) The Roman Soldier (on the left)who was overseeing the execution, saw what had happened, lifted his hands and praised GOD…(Luke 23:47)
E) Down the center of the painting, you can see the large crowd, who had
gathered and witnessed the crucifixion, and saw what had happened, going away in deep sorrow (Luke 23:48) headed back to Jerusalem’s eastern gate…
F) The bottom right of the painting captures the spirit of the
painting…the “Shadows” of the three crosses laid out on Golgotha, and also see
the shadow of Jesus body on the cross.
G) The authenticity of the reproduction can best be illustrated in the
stain/age marks
H) Title: Golgotha is a Hebrew word, which means: “The Place of the Skull”
I) Sub-title: Consummatum est means: It is Finished (John 19:30)or in the
greek (Tetelestai)

4) One other interesting (important) feature of the Painting is its
“perspective”, which comes from Jesus’ view…He is looking out at the people…
Why this is so significant; because, most every depiction, picture or painting of Golgotha, is always of you/us looking at Jesus and at Golgotha, and this one is of Him looking at you!!! (Powerful)

Goupil & Cie was a leading art dealership in 19th century France, with headquarters in Paris. Step by step, Goupil established a worldwide trade with reproductions (engravings) of paintings and sculptures, with a network of branches in London, Brussels, The Hague, Berlin and Vienna, as well as in New York and Australia. Instrumental for this expansion were the Ateliers Photographiques, a plant north of Paris, in Asnières, which took up work in 1869. The leading figure was Adolphe Goupil (1806–1893). His daughter Marie married the French artist Jean-Léon Gérôme. (the artist of the Golgotha painting)

Gérôme’s paintings were made accessible to a very broad audience. His ties with Goupil & Cie, the most advanced company in art reproductions, helped advertise Gérôme’s works. This relationship with the well-known art reproduction company (Gérôme became Goupil’s son-in-law) added to the commercial viability of his compositions; and it helped to make him an increasingly wealthy individual.

Goupil & Cie was formed in 1850; the partners were Adolphe Goupil 1850–1884, Alfred Mainguet 1850–1856, Léon Goupil 1854–1855, Léon Boussod 1856–1884, Vincent van Gogh 1861–1872, Albert Goupil 1872–1884, René Valadon 1878–1884.
